Artist Biography

After many years as a freelance artist, Jā moved to the Comox Valley in 2002 to pursue his art education.  He engaged himself in the Fine Arts Diploma program at North Island College, graduating in 2005.  Jā is now working towards his BFA in the Emily Carr External Degree program at North Island College.

"My art is my response to my personal world.  I'll notice something in everyday life that I react to, and it will automatically filter through me and manifest as an art idea.  It's then up to me to add form to that."

"I'll use any medium that I feel fits the piece best.  I like to make use of all the mediums, from drawing to video.  What often works best for me is medium combinations; I rarely stick to just one.  I love to work large.  It's pleasing to have the viewer immerse themselves in the work - for them to be able to physically 'visit' different areas of the piece."

"When experimenting with art, I often feel more like a mad scientist that an artist; 'Let's put these two things together - see what happens.'  More often than not, completely dissimilar things tend to mesh really well.  I love the dynamics of those kinds of interactions; creating a successful synergy that didn't previously exist is intensely satisfying."
